Cheer Tips for Tumbling

Tumbling is a combination of strength, speed, agility, core strength and flexibility... no wonder it's hard! Tumbling is usually the skill that holds an athlete from progressing to the next level but the good news is, there is a solution!

  • Stop throwing ugly progressions that are unsafe. If you're finding it hard to progress to the next skill and are familiar with face-planting the first thing you need to work on is the strength and conditioning required to execute the skill. For example: to be able to back handspring - make sure you can hit a bridge/backbend, do a back walkover with straight legs and hold a strong, straight handstand by yourself before starting any back handspring drill.

  • To get the height, you need to master the TRIPLE EXTENSION:

    • Standing up with the hips and knees

    • Finishing off with a flick from the ankles through to the toes

  • The right selection of dynamic core and power exercises, as well as a focus on static body positions and handstand holds are guaranteed to improve your tumbling technique and help you progress toward the next level.
